PGYTech PGYTECH Zipod Travel Tripod (Midnight Black)
PGYTECH Zipod Travel Tripod (Midnight Black)The PGYTECH Zipod Travel Tripod (Midnight Black) carries 10 kg and comes without a head, so you fit the one you already use. On top of the centre column sits a 2 in 1 screw that takes both a 3/8" 16 and a 1/4" 20 head. The legs are T800 carbon and extend on the ZipLock leg lock, which catches by itself at any height after a single pull.
Highlights
2 in 1 screw on the centre column: push the 3/8" 16 sleeve down and the 1/4" 20 screw underneath is exposed
ZipLock leg lock that catches after a single pull and retracts with a quarter turn counter clockwise
Five leg sections and a folded length of 40 cm, so it slides into the side pocket of a backpack
Weight of 1.14 kg, 160 grams less than the kit version with ball head
Leg angles of 23°, 53° and 81°, which keep you steady on stairs or a slope
Removable leg tubes and swappable feet with rubber tips and 25 mm metal spikes
OperationThe ZipLock leg lock uses reverse leg rotation, which leaves no play in the lock. You pull a section to the height you want and it stays there. A counter clockwise turn lets the leg retract again, so you never clamp or open sections one by one.
MaterialThe tubes are built from eight layers of T800 carbon with a wall thickness of 0.9 mm, wound in one continuous process. That layup has 55% more tensile strength than the usual T300 carbon, which you notice in wind or with a long telephoto lens on top. The spider and the clamps are aluminium. The tripod is not waterproof, but the legs can stand in shallow water; take the tubes off afterwards and rinse them with clean water.
Centre columnThe centre column is removable. Without a head you reach 118 cm with the column retracted and 144 cm with it raised. Fit the short column instead and you work just above the ground, while the quick release at the bottom lets you invert the column for macro work. The hook underneath takes your camera bag as a counterweight, and a double ended S4 and T8 bit sits inside the column, so you carry no tools.
Tripod headThis tripod has no head on it. On top of the column sits a 2 in 1 screw: push the outer 3/8" 16 sleeve down and the 1/4" 20 screw underneath is exposed. That way the ball head, video head or gimbal you already own goes straight on without an adapter. If you would rather have the complete package, there is the Zipod Travel Tripod Kit with ball head.
CompatibilityThe spider has a 1/4" 20 socket with Arri style locating pin holes for a magic arm or a monitor bracket. The legs carry attachment points for a shoulder strap, so you can take the tripod along hands free. With a suitable head it holds a full frame camera with a 70 200 mm lens.,
