Barndoors are one of the most useful accessories in a studio and are used to control the light scattering. Unlike spreading the light in all directions, the screen flaps can prevent the light from touching some of the subject or the background. If you aim for a carbon black background, you can "shield" the background with the screen flaps so that the light only hits the subject.
