The Sony FX5 Body + 32-bit XLR Handle Unit is a professional Cinema Line camera designed for filmmakers who want to combine uncompromising image quality with professional in-camera audio recording. With a new 16.6 MP stacked Exmor RS CMOS full-frame sensor, the powerful BIONZ XR2 processor with integrated AI, internal 16-bit X-OCN RAW recording, Open Gate, and support for up to 5K 120p and 4K 240p, the FX5 delivers top-class performance for everything from feature films and commercials to documentaries and TV production. The included XLR Handle Unit provides two professional XLR/TRS inputs and support for up to four audio channels with 32-bit float recording, making this a complete solution for professional film productions right out of the box.
The Sony FX5 is equipped with a new 35mm Exmor RS CMOS sensor featuring a stacked design that delivers extremely fast readout, low rolling shutter, and impressive detail. Together with the new BIONZ XR2 processor and a dedicated AI unit, the camera delivers exceptional image quality, fast response, and advanced noise reduction. The result is cinematic images with natural skin tones, high dynamic range, and impressive color reproduction straight out of the camera.
The FX5 offers internal recording in 16-bit X-OCN RAW, eliminating the need for external RAW recorders in many productions. The camera also supports XAVC HS and XAVC S with H.265 and H.264 compression for flexible workflows, whether the focus is on maximum image quality or efficient file management.
Open Gate recording across the entire sensor provides maximum flexibility for post-production and delivery to various formats. The camera can record up to 5K at 120 frames per second and 4K at up to 240 frames per second, making it perfect for advanced slow motion, commercials, documentaries, and creative productions where every detail counts.
With more than 15 stops of dynamic range in S-Log3, the FX5 captures both highlights and shadows with impressive detail. Three base ISO modes—800, 4000, and 12800—combined with Dual Gain Shooting deliver very low noise levels and maximum flexibility in both daylight and very low-light conditions.
The built-in AI processor identifies and tracks people, animals, and birds with high precision. With up to 759 phase-detection focus points and Real-time Eye AF, the FX5 delivers fast and reliable focusing even at wide apertures or when subjects are moving quickly.
This version comes with Sony’s professional XLR Handle Unit, which provides two XLR/TRS inputs, a 3.5 mm stereo mini jack, and support for up to four audio channels. The system enables recording at up to 96 kHz and 32-bit float, providing an extremely wide dynamic range and minimizing the risk of distortion and clipping. For documentaries, interviews, TV, and professional film production, this offers a complete audio solution straight from the camera.
Despite its advanced performance, the FX5 features a compact and lightweight body designed for handheld shooting, gimbals, drones, and rigs. The 5-axis image stabilization, combined with Dynamic Active Mode, delivers stable footage even when shooting without a tripod, while the rugged, weather-sealed body can withstand demanding shooting environments.
The FX5 is equipped with dual CFexpress Type A/SD card slots, HDMI Type A, dual USB-C ports, 2.5G Ethernet, Wi-Fi 6E, and Bluetooth 5.3. The camera integrates seamlessly into modern production environments with remote control, fast file transfer, network-based workflows, and professional monitoring.
Sony’s BIG6 interface draws inspiration from the CineAlta series and brings together the most important camera settings on a single, easy-to-navigate screen. Waveform, False Color, Focus Map, Histogram, Peaking, and support for custom LUT files make exposure and focusing faster and more reliable during professional shoots.
