NEON 17 is a precision on-set and in-studio HD HDR production monitor-recorder designed for accurate monitoring, recording and playback. It delivers 1000Nits full-screen brightness, 0 Nits deep black and native DCI-P3 wide colour gamut accuracy. The monitor records in industry-standard codecs and offers modular I/O for flexible workflows.
The Neon 17 provides 1000Nits full-screen HDR brightness paired with deep blacks down to 0 Nits. As a result, the panel achieves a Dynamic Contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1, which preserves detail across deep shadows and bright highlights. This combination helps you evaluate both subtle shadow detail and punchy highlights accurately on set or in studio.
Furthermore, the display offers native 100% DCI-P3 coverage. Wide gamuts such as BT.2020 are accurately processed by the AtomHDR engine to deliver consistent representations across HDR and SDR workflows.
The AtomHDR engine provides an end-to-end colour management pipeline. You can accurately manage input and display gamma and gamut, and select monitor modes for SDR or HDR. NEON 17 supports common standards including Rec.709, Rec.2100 HLG and ST.2084 PQ.
Built-in transforms convert LOG to HDR standards. Also, you can apply 3D LUTs for SDR monitoring to preview a specified look or exposure compensation. Downstream outputs let you convert between standards for target displays, with options for SDR, LUTs or HDR conversions.
NEON uses a modular platform that keeps the panel in service while allowing maintenance and upgrades. The Master Control Unit (MCU) is the system brain and supports HDMI 2.0 for input and loop out. The MCU accepts 4K DCI input at 4096 x 2160 up to 60p when using HDMI 2.0.
The MCU firmware is upgradable. You can store up to 8 x 3D LUTs in the internal memory or use a 2.5” HDD or SSD to maintain an unlimited LUT library. Uploading LUTs and managing files is possible via the AtomOS app on iOS.
NEON includes the AtomX SDI expansion module and offers an Xpansion port for further upgrades. The AtomX SDI provides 2 x 12G SDI. The configurable ports allow input of up to 4K60p video with compatibility for single and dual link 1.5G/3G/6G or A/B inputs and the ability to toggle between them. As standards evolve, both the MCU and Xpansion modules can be changed to meet new needs without replacing the whole monitor.
NEON 17 includes a comprehensive set of monitoring and analysis tools that operate during live monitoring, recording or playback. These tools help you check exposure, focus and signal integrity:
NEON has Timecode Systems SYNC technology built in and offers remote control via AtomRemote OS over Bluetooth. You can operate NEON LE from iOS and other supported devices. Note: an iOS device is REQUIRED to operate NEON remotely with AtomRemote OS.
The monitor-recording system accepts SDI and HDMI inputs and records high-quality 10bit 4:2:2 files. SDI supports up to 4K DCI 60p via 12G or Dual 6G, and lower resolutions or frame rates via 1.5G/3G SDI with up to 12 channels of embedded audio. HDMI (without HDCP) is supported up to 4K60p or HD 120fps with up to 8 channels of audio and automatic detection of HDR infoframes to match input signal types.
Recordings use industry-standard Apple ProRes or Avid DNx codecs. Files use Scene Shot Take file naming and include rich metadata in the file header so NLEs and MAM systems can use asset data for post workflows.
To play back recorded clips or transfer media, insert the SSD into the MCU drive slot. NEON also accepts SSDs from other Atomos devices, and clips can be exported directly from an NLE or transcoded to ProRes/DNx for playback on NEON.
NEON offers a variety of broadcast and cinematic frame guides. You can enable EBU R5 graphic guides and action safe areas. The monitor also supports anamorphic de-squeeze with 2x, 1.5x and 1.33x options to match a wide variety of lenses and shooting formats.

Question: Do I need an iOS device to control the Neon 17 remotely?
Answer: Yes. AtomRemote OS runs on iOS and NEON’s Bluetooth remote operation requires an iOS device for full remote control functionality.
Question: What HDR and SDR standards can Neon 17 display and convert between?
Answer: Neon 17 supports SDR and HDR monitor modes, including Rec.709, Rec.2100 HLG and ST.2084 PQ. The AtomHDR engine also handles LOG to HDR transforms and applies 3D LUTs for SDR workflows, allowing consistent representations across standards.
Question: How does Neon 17 handle recording and media playback?
Answer: Neon 17 records 10bit 4:2:2 files in Apple ProRes or Avid DNx formats with Scene Shot Take file naming and embedded metadata. Recorded SSDs can be inserted into the MCU drive slot for immediate playback, and clips can be exported from NLEs or transcoded for playback on NEON.
Question: Can I upgrade the input interfaces as standards change?
Answer: Yes. The modular design lets you replace or upgrade the MCU and Xpansion modules (for example the AtomX SDI) so you can add or change I/O without taking the main panel out of service.
