B&W battery.case P908.8 (orange) – Approved for transport & storage of intact and defective lithium batteries

The B&W battery.case P908.8 is designed for the safe storage and transport of lithium-ion batteries used in e-bikes, drones, cordless screwdrivers and similar battery-powered devices. It is officially approved for both intact and defective lithium batteries according to transport regulations P903 and P908, and it meets UN packaging specifications 3480/3481.

Approved transport and storage solution (P903 & P908)

This case is certified as hazardous goods packaging for transporting intact and defective lithium batteries on public roads under ADR P908. It also fulfils the requirements for P903 transport and storage of intact lithium batteries. Therefore, you can use the case for routine transport as well as for handling batteries that are declared defective for safety reasons.

Key safety features

  • Unique safety system closes automatically in the event of a fire inside the case; this mechanism is registered with the German Patent and Trade Mark Office.
  • High-quality plastic outer case with an internal metal container for enhanced containment in the event of a thermal event.
  • Activated carbon filter reduces escaping gases and significantly reduces soot formation during a battery fire.
  • Tested under real conditions: during tests with burning and exploding bicycle batteries, no flames escaped and the outer shell of the B&W battery.case P908.8 remained constantly below 100°C.
  • Conforms to strict UN packaging specifications 3480/3481 for lithium battery transport.

Practical handling and use cases

Use the case to store or transport batteries when they are not used for extended periods. It is suitable for:

  • batteries declared defective for safety reasons
  • deformed or inflated batteries
  • degassed or burnt cells or batteries
  • batteries with melted plastic parts or connections
  • batteries that emit a strange gas smell
  • batteries where a BMS has identified defective cells
  • batteries with damaged casings

Follow the corresponding instructions for P908 when storing or transporting defective batteries. For intact batteries, follow the P903 application instructions described below.

Recommendations for handling intact batteries (P903)

  • Use the included pre-punched cube foam to protect and stabilise the battery during transport. Adapt the foam to match the battery shape.
  • Fire bags are not mandatory for P903 applications, but you must protect batteries from short circuits and follow any additional specifications or operating instructions when necessary.

Design details that support safe charging and transport

The case allows safe charging of a battery while it remains closed, thanks to a dedicated cable routing system. You can pass charging cables through the lockable cable grommet; cables with a maximum permissible diameter of up to 8 mm are held securely in place by the slide-in plate. This enables monitored charging without exposing the battery to open-air risks.

Included features and user-focused design

  • Extremely sturdy polypropylene (PP) housing
  • Internal metal container for added containment
  • Activated carbon filter to reduce gases and soot
  • Pre-punched cube foam for customised battery fit
  • Foam lid for extra protection
  • One fireproof protective bag (40 x 60 cm) included
  • Stackable design for convenient storage
  • Two eyelets for padlocks (Ø 7 mm) for additional security
  • Rubberised carrying handle for comfortable transport
  • Lockable cable grommet and slide-in plate to secure charging cables (up to 8 mm diameter)

Test performance and approvals

The battery.case was tested under realistic conditions, including tests with burning and exploding bicycle batteries. During those tests no flames escaped from the case and the outer shell temperature remained below 100°C. The case is tested and approved as hazardous goods packaging in accordance with ADR P908 and conforms to UN packaging specifications 3480/3481.

Capacity and payload

The B&W battery.case P908.8 offers a practical internal loading space and a defined maximum payload to ensure safe transport and handling.

Specification Value
External dimensions 510 x 420 x 215 mm
Loading space 388 x 264 x 140 mm
Weight (without shipping packaging) 10.5 kg
Maximum payload 8 kg
Fireproof protective bag included 40 x 60 cm

Notes

The pre-punched cube foam can be customised to hold different battery shapes securely. The case comes in orange and the contents shown in product photos are not included unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Question: Can I transport a swollen or deformed e-bike battery in this case?
Answer: Yes. The B&W battery.case P908.8 is approved for the transport and storage of defective batteries, including deformed or inflated cells, under ADR P908 when you follow the recommended handling instructions.

Question: Is it safe to charge a battery while it is inside the closed case?
Answer: Yes. The case supports safe charging through the lockable cable grommet and slide-in plate, which secures cables up to 8 mm in diameter and allows monitored charging while the case remains closed.

Question: What protection does the case offer if a battery catches fire?
Answer: The case features an internal metal container, an activated carbon filter to reduce escaping gases and soot, and a patented safety system that closes automatically in the event of an internal fire. In real-condition tests, no flames escaped and the outer shell stayed below 100°C.

Question: How should I prepare an intact battery for transport in this case?
Answer: For intact batteries under P903, adapt the pre-punched cube foam to fit the battery, protect terminals from short circuits, and follow any additional specifications or operating instructions. Fire bags are not required for P903 but may be used if recommended.

Question: What is the maximum weight of batteries I can load into the case?
Answer: The maximum payload for the B&W battery.case P908.8 is 8 kg. Ensure you do not exceed this limit to comply with the case’s approved use.
