The NiSi Cine Filter 138mm Linear Polarizer reduces reflections and glare by filtering polarized light that results from reflections on non-metallic surfaces. It also clears up haze in distant landscapes and increases the saturation and vividness of skies and foliage. Use it when you want cleaner reflections and more impactful colors in your footage or stills.
Light from the sun becomes partially polarized when it scatters off air molecules and when it reflects from surfaces. This directional polarization can create haze and unwanted reflections. The NiSi linear polarizer arranges that polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing much of the unwanted light to be absorbed and thus reducing glare.
A linear polarizer filters directionally polarized light so reflections and glare from non-metallic surfaces are reduced. You will notice clearer distant details, stronger color saturation in skies and foliage, and less scattered haze in scenes.
Because a linear polarizer does not contain an additional quarter wave plate, it does not convert linearly polarized light into circularly polarized light. As a result, in-camera autofocus and exposure metering can become skewed when this filter is used. Therefore, this filter is recommended when you are not relying on in-camera exposure metering or autofocus.
This NiSi filter is manufactured by laminating a layer of polarizing film between two pieces of optical glass. The glass layers are then ground flat to maintain image sharpness. The filter also offers scratch resistance and ships with a leatherette pouch for safe storage and transport.
Question: Will this polarizer affect autofocus and exposure?
Answer: Yes. Because it is a linear polarizer and lacks a quarter wave plate, it can skew in-camera autofocus and exposure metering. Use it when you do not rely on those automatic in-camera functions.
Question: When does the polarizer have the strongest effect?
Answer: The polarizer shows its strongest effect when used roughly at a 90° angle from the sun. At that angle you will see the greatest reduction in reflections and the most vivid sky and foliage colors.
Question: How is the filter constructed to protect image quality?
Answer: The polarizing film is laminated between two pieces of optical glass, and the glass layers are ground flat to maintain image sharpness. The filter also includes scratch-resistant properties for durability.
Question: What comes with the filter for storage and transport?
Answer: A leatherette pouch is included to store and transport the filter safely and to help protect it from scratches and dust.
