This NiSi Nano Soft-Edge Graduated IRND filter darkens specific areas of an image—most commonly bright skies—while leaving the rest of the frame at a normal exposure. The filter is densest at the edge and tapers to clear by the middle, with a soft, gradual line of transition between the dense and clear areas. Photographers and filmmakers use it to balance exposure between sky and foreground without affecting the unaffected regions.
The filter’s design has been optimized for use with digital sensors. It promotes nearly flat attenuation across both visible and infrared wavelengths. To maintain color neutrality and suppress color casts that sometimes occur with long exposures, one layer of NiSi Optical Nano Coating is applied to each surface of the filter. As a result, the filter helps deliver cleaner, truer blacks when used in-camera.
Use the soft-edge graduated density to control bright areas that sit near the horizon or within a scene where a hard line would be noticeable. Because the density tapers gradually from the edge toward the middle, the transition appears natural in scenes with irregular horizons or where a gentle blend is needed between sky and foreground. At the same time, the rest of the image remains unaffected by the neutral density effect.
Use this soft-edge GND when you need to reduce overexposed skies or bright background areas while keeping foreground exposure unchanged. It works well for landscape scenes with soft or irregular horizons, for filmmaking scenarios where smooth blending is essential, and any digital workflow requiring infrared attenuation to avoid color casts.

Question: What does "soft-edge" mean for this graduated filter?
Answer: Soft-edge means the filter’s density transitions gradually from the darkest edge toward the clear center, creating a smooth blend. This makes it suitable for scenes with irregular horizons or where a hard transition would be visible.
Question: Will this filter change the colors in my image?
Answer: No. Neutral density action does not affect image coloration. Additionally, the NiSi Optical Nano Coating on each surface attenuates infrared as well as visible wavelengths to help prevent color casts, especially during longer exposures.
Question: Is this filter suitable for digital cameras?
Answer: Yes. The filter’s design has been optimized for use with digital sensors to provide nearly flat attenuation across visible and infrared light, helping maintain color neutrality with digital capture.
Question: What is included with the filter for storage and transport?
Answer: The filter comes with a leatherette pouch for storage and transport, helping protect the optical surface when not in use.
