NiSi Cine Filter Nano IR GND Soft 4x5.65" 0.9 – Soft-edge graduated IRND to control bright skies

This NiSi Nano Soft-Edge Graduated IRND Filter helps you darken specific areas of an image, such as bright skies, while keeping the exposure in the rest of the frame normal and unaffected. The filter is densest at the edge and gradually tapers to clear toward the middle, with a soft-edged line of transition for smooth blending.

Optimized design for digital sensors and color neutrality

NiSi designed this filter specifically for use with digital sensors. The optical layout promotes nearly flat attenuation across both visible and infrared light. As a result, the filter minimizes color casts and preserves truer, cleaner blacks when you increase exposure.

To maintain color neutrality, each surface of the filter receives one layer of NiSi Optical Nano Coating. This coating attenuates infrared wavelengths as well as visible wavelengths, helping to suppress color casts that can occur with longer exposure times.

How the soft-edge graduated IRND works

The filter darkens only the bright areas of a scene—most commonly skies—while leaving the rest of the frame unaffected. It achieves this by being densest at the edge and gradually tapering to clear by the center. The soft-edged transition blends smoothly into the scene, making it suitable for horizons that are not perfectly straight or that contain elements like trees or hills.

Neutral density filters do not affect the coloration of the image, so you can use this graduated filter without altering your scene's color balance.

Key features

  • Optical glass construction: Constructed from optical glass for clarity as well as color fidelity.
  • Graduated neutral density effect: Graduated neutral density filter darkens bright areas of an image, such as skies, while leaving the remainder of the frame unaffected.
  • Soft-edged transition: Soft-edged line of transition between the dense and clear areas for subtle blending.
  • Color neutral: Filter does not affect coloration of the image and is ideal for use with other filters.
  • NiSi Optical Nano Coating: Each surface includes one layer of NiSi Optical Nano Coating that attenuates infrared light as well as visible wavelengths, to maintain color neutrality and suppress color casts due to increased exposure times.
  • Optical clarity: Constructed from optical glass for clarity.
  • Durability and maintenance: Scratch resistance and easy to clean for dependable field use.
  • Thickness: This filter is 4mm thick.
  • Storage: Leatherette pouch included for storage and transport.

Who should use this filter

Landscape and outdoor filmmakers or photographers who need to control bright skies while preserving the rest of the exposure will find this filter useful. It pairs well with other filters because it maintains color neutrality and is optimized for digital sensors.

FAQ

Question: Will this filter change the color balance of my images?
Answer: No. The filter is designed as a neutral density filter and does not affect image coloration. In addition, NiSi applies a Nano Optical Coating to each surface to attenuate infrared and visible wavelengths, helping to maintain color neutrality and suppress color casts.

Question: Can I use this filter with other filters?
Answer: Yes. The filter does not affect coloration of the image and is ideal for use with other filters. Its optical glass construction and neutral behavior make it suitable for stacking with compatible glass filters or camera-mounted systems.

Question: What does the soft-edge graduation mean in practice?
Answer: The soft-edge graduation means the density transitions gradually from the dark edge to clear at the middle, producing a smooth blend. This is especially useful when the horizon is not perfectly straight or contains foreground elements like trees or hills.

Question: Is this filter suitable for digital cameras?
Answer: Yes. The design has been optimized for use with digital sensors to achieve nearly flat attenuation of visible and infrared light, which helps produce cleaner blacks and reduce unwanted color shifts with longer exposures.
