NiSi Cine Filter Nano IR GND Soft 6x6" 1.2 – Soft-Edge Graduated Filter for Darkening Bright Skies

The NiSi Nano Soft-Edge Graduated IRND Filter (6x6" with a 1.2 density) helps you darken bright areas of a scene — for example skies — while leaving the rest of the frame at a normal exposure. It uses a soft-edged transition between dense and clear areas so you can blend the darkening smoothly into the midtones and foreground.

Designed for digital sensors and neutral color

The filter design has been optimized for use with digital sensors. To reduce color casts and maintain accurate tones, NiSi applies one layer of its Optical Nano Coating to each surface. This coating attenuates both visible and infrared light, helping to preserve color neutrality and produce cleaner, truer blacks during longer exposures.

How the soft-edge GND works

The filter is densest at the edge and tapers to clear by the middle. As a result, it darkens only the brightest regions of your image while the remainder of the frame remains unaffected. The soft-edged line of transition creates a gradual blend between the dense and clear areas, which makes it useful for scenes with less distinct horizon lines.

Key features

  • Constructed from optical glass for clarity and color fidelity
  • Soft-edge graduated neutral density (GND) darkens bright areas while leaving the rest of the image unaffected
  • One layer of NiSi Optical Nano Coating applied to each surface to attenuate infrared and visible wavelengths
  • Maintains color neutrality and suppresses color casts during increased exposure times
  • Filter does not affect the coloration of the image and is suitable for use with other filters
  • Scratch resistant
  • Easy to clean
  • 4 mm thickness
  • Leatherette pouch included for storage and transport

Use cases

Use this soft-edge IRND GND when you need to reduce brightness in specific parts of the frame — such as a bright sky — without changing exposure across the entire image. Because it is optimized for digital sensors and treated to attenuate infrared, it is especially useful for maintaining neutral color tones in scenes that require longer exposures or stacking with other filters.

Frequently asked questions

  • Question: Is this filter suitable for digital camera sensors?
Answer: Yes. The filter is optimized for use with digital sensors and includes NiSi Optical Nano Coating on each surface to help maintain color neutrality when used with digital systems.

  • Question: Will the filter change the coloration of my images?
Answer: No. Neutral density filters, including this NiSi soft-edge GND, do not affect image coloration. The Nano coating further attenuates infrared and visible wavelengths to suppress color casts during longer exposures.

  • Question: When should I choose the soft-edge version?
Answer: Choose the soft-edge GND when the transition between sky and foreground is uneven or when you need a gradual blend between darkened and clear areas. The soft transition helps avoid hard lines in scenes with irregular horizons.

  • Question: How durable and maintainable is the filter?
Answer: The filter is constructed from optical glass and offers scratch resistance. It is also designed to be easy to clean. For storage and transport, a leatherette pouch is included.

  • Question: Can I stack this filter with others?
Answer: Yes. The filter does not affect coloration and is described as ideal for use with other filters, allowing you to combine it with complementary filtration as needed.
