NiSi Close Up Lens Kit NC 58mm – +5 Diopters for Macro Photography on 58mm Lenses

What this kit does

The NiSi Close Up Lens Kit NC 58mm converts many standard lenses into close-focusing macro lenses. It provides a +5 diopter magnification and reduces the minimal focal distance so you can capture much closer details without changing to a dedicated macro lens. In practical terms, you can reach a 1:1 magnification at a focal length of 120mm on a full-frame camera.

Compatibility and use

The kit mounts on any lens with a 58mm filter thread. It works with both prime and zoom lenses, and NiSi states compatibility for lenses with focal lengths from 24–250mm on APS-C cameras and 35–250mm on full-frame cameras. You can also use the close-up lens together with macro lenses that have focal lengths over 50mm.

To achieve properly focused images, know the maximum and minimum focusing distances for your lens when the close-up lens is fitted. The working distance varies with the lens used and will be between 9–22 cm. For sharper detail, NiSi recommends using an aperture between f/8 and f/16.

Optical design and image characteristics

NiSi built the close-up lens from double optical corrective glass and uses an apochromatic design to reduce color fringing. In addition, the lens has a multi-nano coating that helps maintain natural color and limits purple/green fringing both in focus and in the bokeh. The close-up lens contains dual lens elements made of high-quality optical glass.

FAQ

Question: Will the NiSi Close Up Lens Kit fit my lens if it has a 58mm filter thread?
Answer: Yes. The close-up lens mounts directly on any lens with a 58mm filter thread. NiSi also includes 49mm and 52mm adaptors for smaller threads.

Question: What focal lengths work best with this close-up lens?
Answer: The kit is specified for lenses with focal lengths from 24–250mm on APS-C cameras and 35–250mm on full-frame cameras. It also works with zoom lenses within those ranges and can be used alongside macro lenses over 50mm.

Question: How close can I focus and what magnification will I get?
Answer: Working distance depends on the lens used and will be between about 9–22 cm. The close-up lens provides +5 diopters; on a full-frame camera you can reach 1:1 magnification at a 120mm focal length.

Question: Which aperture should I use for sharp detail when shooting with this close-up lens?
Answer: NiSi recommends an aperture between f/8 and f/16 to achieve the sharpest details with the close-up lens attached.

Question: How does the optical design affect image quality?
Answer: The lens uses double optical corrective glass with an apochromatic design and a multi-nano coating. These features help maintain natural color, reduce purple/green fringing, and preserve detail both in focus and in the bokeh.
