NiSi Filter S5 Circular ND8 (for S5 Holder) – 3-stop exposure reduction

This NiSi Circular ND8 is made for the NiSi S5 150mm filter holder system and provides a 3-stop exposure reduction. It screws into a NiSi S5 150mm filter holder adapter ring once the kit’s included Pro Screw-In Circular Polarizer has been removed. Use it to darken the entire image and gain creative control over aperture and shutter speed.

How it works and what it does

The ND8 has a 0.9 density, which creates an overall darkening of the scene. As a result, you can shoot with a wider aperture or a slower shutter speed than you normally would. This lets you control depth of field more easily or convey motion in scenes that include moving elements.

For example, slowing your shutter or opening the aperture helps you blur water and show movement. ND filters also assist when scene contrast between highlights and shadows is too high to obtain a quality exposure without compromise.

Typical use cases

  • Commonly used for waterfalls and capturing flowing water.
  • Effective for water flow at shutter speeds commonly between 0.5 seconds and 2 seconds.
  • Useful whenever you need a 3-stop exposure reduction to control motion or depth of field in bright conditions.

Optical performance and coatings

NiSi ND filters aim to preserve true-to-life color. They are made from high-quality optical glass (not resin) and include nano coating to prevent loss of detail. In addition, these ND filters include an infrared protection coating layer to reduce infrared contamination that can cause unwanted red color casts at small apertures.

NiSi’s proprietary Pro Nano Coating reduces unwanted reflections and adds a waterproof and scratch-resistant layer. This coating also helps when cleaning fingerprints, dust, and water stains from the filter surface.

Mounting and compatibility

Mount this filter by screwing it into the NiSi S5 150mm filter holder adapter ring after removing the kit’s Pro Screw-In Circular Polarizer. Important: it cannot be used in a NiSi S6 filter holder.

Frequently asked questions

Question: Which filter holder does this ND8 work with?
Answer: It is designed for use with the NiSi S5 150mm filter holder system and screws into the S5 150mm filter holder adapter ring after the kit’s Pro Screw-In Circular Polarizer is removed.

Question: How much light does the ND8 block?
Answer: The filter has a 0.9 density and provides a 3-stop exposure reduction (ND8), allowing wider apertures or slower shutter speeds.

Question: Will this filter change my colors or add a cast?
Answer: NiSi ND filters are stated not to affect coloration and aim to deliver true-to-life color. The filter uses high-quality optical glass and coatings to preserve image color.

Question: What coatings are included and what do they do?
Answer: The filter includes a nano coating and NiSi Pro Nano Coating to reduce reflections and add waterproof and scratch-resistant properties. It also has an infrared protection coating layer to minimize infrared contamination that can cause a red cast at small apertures.

Question: Is this filter suitable for long-exposure water photography?
Answer: Yes. The ND8 is commonly used for waterfalls and capturing water flow at shutter speeds typically between 0.5 seconds and 2 seconds, helping you convey motion in flowing scenes.

Question: Can I use this in a NiSi S6 Filterholder?
Answer: No. The filter cannot be used in a NiSi S6 Filterholder.
