NiSi Matte Box C5 Filmmaker Kit – Prevent Glare and Use Two Filters Simultaneously

The NiSi Matte Box C5 Filmmaker Kit fits DSLR and mirrorless cameras to prevent sunlight or other light sources from causing glare and flare. It also accepts different types of filters, so you can control exposure and look directly at the lens. As standard, the matte box suits 95mm outer-diameter cine lenses, but you can also mount it on lenses with filter threads of 67, 72, 77 or 82mm using the included adapter rings.

Designed for flexible filter use

The kit includes two removable filter trays. One tray accepts 4x5.65" cine filters. The other tray accepts either a 100x100mm square filter or a 4x4" cine filter. Thanks to the formfitting filter system, you can shoot ultra-wide angle without vignetting when using 15mm+ focal lengths. In addition, you can use two filters at the same time—one in each tray—to combine effects or stack density.

Included filters and optical effects

  • NiSi True Color Variable ND 1–5 stops filter made specifically for the C5 Matte Box.
  • NiSi FS ND16 (4 stops) 4x5.65" filter, which can work with the variable ND to achieve a combined variable ND effect of 1–9 stops with minimum color shift and no X-effects.
  • NiSi Black Mist 1/8 4x5.65" filter, designed to soften or diffuse images, reduce excess sharpness and contrast, and add atmosphere—especially useful for handling highlights.

Practical design details

The matte box has an inside depth of 26.5mm, which helps to avoid glare. It features air gaps on the sides to reduce wind resistance during outdoor shooting. The top flag uses a carbon fiber design and opens to 180°, allowing you to control overhead light precisely. With a weight of only 350g, the matte box remains light enough for use on gimbals and handheld rigs.

Smart FAQ

Question: Will the Matte Box fit my lens if it has a 77mm thread?
Answer: Yes. The kit includes adapter rings for 67, 72, 77 and 82mm filter threads, so you can mount the C5 on lenses with those thread sizes.

Question: Can I use two filters at once and combine ND strengths?
Answer: Yes. The C5 has two filter trays so you can use one filter in each tray. For example, the True Color V-ND (1–5 stops) and the FS ND16 (4 stops) can combine to give a broader variable ND range with minimal color shift and no X-effects.

Question: Is the matte box suitable for ultra-wide shots without vignetting?
Answer: Yes. The formfitting filter system is designed to allow ultra-wide angle shooting from roughly 15mm and up without vignetting, enabling wider framing when you need it.

Question: Can I use this on a gimbal or handheld rig?
Answer: Yes. The matte box weighs 350g, which keeps the setup light enough for gimbal and handheld use while still providing effective glare control and filter options.
