NiSi Explorer 100x150mm Reverse GND8 – 3-stop reverse graduated neutral density filter

The NiSi Explorer Reverse Graduated Neutral Density Filter GND8 (0.9) reduces incoming light by 3 stops. It comes in a 100 x 150 mm square format designed for the NiSi 100 mm filter system. The filter uses tempered B270 glass and includes NiSi’s coatings to preserve image quality and resist dirt and moisture.

What this filter does

This reverse GND evens out differences in brightness between a bright horizon and darker foreground. Unlike a standard graduated filter, the darkest area sits at the center of the filter. Therefore, it suits scenes where the light is most intense near the horizon and then gradually decreases toward the sky.

For example, you can use this filter for seascapes or open vistas with nothing protruding above the horizon, where the horizon line receives the strongest light.

Durable construction and coatings

The NiSi Explorer series uses B270 tempered glass. As a result, these filters are made to be more durable than typical glass filters; NiSi states they are twice as durable. Additionally, the glass receives an IR coating and NiSi’s Nano coating that repels dirt, water, and oil. These treatments help maintain neutral coloration and simplify cleaning.

Note: The filters undergo a hardening process to reduce the risk of accidental damage. However, they are not unbreakable, and the hardening may decline over time.

Compatibility and use

The 100 x 150 mm NiSi Explorer filters fit the NiSi 100 mm filter system. You can use them with lenses that employ filter threads from 49 mm to 95 mm when combined with the appropriate NiSi holder and step-up rings.

FAQ

  • Question: When should I use a reverse GND instead of a regular graduated ND?
Answer: Use a reverse GND when the brightest part of the scene sits along the horizon and light falls off toward the sky. This makes reverse GNDs especially useful for seascapes and open horizons without elements rising above the horizon line.
  • Question: Will this filter change my image colors?
Answer: No. The NiSi Explorer filter is designed not to affect image coloration and includes an IR coating to help maintain color neutrality.
  • Question: How durable is the glass and how should I handle it?
Answer: The filter uses tempered B270 glass and a hardening process that NiSi states makes it twice as durable as typical glass filters. Despite this, it is not unbreakable. Handle it with care and store it safely; the hardening characteristics may diminish over time.
  • Question: What holder or lenses work with this filter?
Answer: The filter fits the NiSi 100 mm filter system. You can mount it on lenses with 49 mm to 95 mm filter threads when you use the appropriate NiSi holder and step-up rings.
  • Question: How do the Nano coatings affect maintenance?
Answer: The Nano coating repels dirt, water, and oil, which helps reduce cleaning frequency and makes residue easier to remove when you do clean the filter.
