NiSi Square Filter Explorer 150X150mm IRND 64 (6 Stops) – hardened glass with IR and Nano coatings

The NiSi Explorer series delivers hardened glass filters that resist accidental breakage better than standard glass filters. This 150x150mm IRND 64 (6 stops) filter belongs to that Explorer family and suits active photographers who need durable neutral density performance in the field.

Durable tempered glass and protective coatings

The Explorer filters use a tempered glass design to increase durability. The Explorer Collection is built around a special B270 tempered glass that offers roughly twice the durability of typical glass filters. The filter does not change image coloration and includes an IR coating plus the same dirt-, water- and oil-repellent Nano coating used on NiSi’s regular filters.

Please note that the tempering and hardening process makes the glass much less prone to accidental damage, but it does not make the glass unbreakable. Over time the hardening effect may decline.

What this filter is and when to use it

This product is an IRND 64 neutral density filter providing 6 stops of light reduction. Neutral density filters reduce the amount of light entering the lens so you can use slower shutter speeds or wider apertures to create motion blur or shallow depth of field under brighter conditions.

How to choose the right ND strength

Choose an ND filter strength based on the light conditions and the effect you want to achieve. Below are common use cases for different ND strengths:

  • ND8 / 3 stops: Commonly used for waterfalls and flowing water with shutter speeds around 0.5 to 2 seconds.
  • ND64 / 6 stops: Often used during the “golden hour” (shortly after sunrise or before sunset). ND64 enables longer exposures—typically 1–2 minutes in those low-light periods—to smooth water or clouds. It also works well for capturing dynamic water while retaining some texture just before the golden hour.
  • ND1000 / 10 stops: Suited for bright daytime use when much more light blocking is required. With appropriate settings, ND1000 can prolong exposures up to around 5 minutes during the golden hour.

Compatibility note (about the Explorer 100x100 mm filters)

The original Explorer Collection includes 100x100 mm neutral density filters. Those 100x100 mm Explorer filters are compatible with the NiSi 100 mm filter system and can be used on lenses with filter threads from 49 mm to 95 mm. This compatibility statement applies specifically to the 100x100 mm Explorer filters described in the collection information.

FAQ

question: Are these Explorer filters unbreakable?
Answer: No. The Explorer filters undergo tempering and hardening to make them much less prone to accidental damage, but they are not unbreakable. The hardening effect can also decline over time.

question: What does the IR coating do and does it affect color?
Answer: The Explorer filters include an IR coating. Together with the filter’s optical design, the coatings help maintain accurate image coloration and reduce infrared contamination without altering the natural colors of the image.

question: How is the Nano coating useful in practice?
Answer: The Nano coating repels dirt, water and oil, which helps keep the filter surface cleaner in the field and supports easier maintenance over time.

question: When should I choose the ND64 (6 stops) compared to other ND strengths?
Answer: ND64 (6 stops) is generally chosen for extended exposures during the golden hour to achieve smooth water or cloud motion, typically producing exposures around 1–2 minutes depending on conditions. It also works well for capturing moving water with some retained texture just before the golden hour.

question: Does the compatibility information for 100x100 mm Explorer filters apply to the 150x150 mm filter listed here?
Answer: The compatibility details provided in the product information refer specifically to the 100x100 mm Explorer filters and their fit with the NiSi 100 mm filter system and lens threads from 49 mm to 95 mm. For this 150x150mm product, refer to the relevant holder or system specifications to confirm compatibility.
