The NiSi Square Nano IRGND Medium 150x170mm is a rectangular graduated neutral density filter designed specifically for landscape photographers. It darkens bright areas of an image, typically skies, while leaving the rest of the scene at a normal exposure.
Made from high quality optical glass (not resin), the filter features nano coatings to protect fine detail. In addition, NiSi added an infrared protection coating to reduce unwanted infrared contamination that can cause a red color cast when shooting at small apertures.
The filter has a dark area at the top that transitions gradually to clear at the bottom. This medium-edged transition helps prevent overexposure of skies while allowing accurate exposure for foreground elements. Because the filter is rectangular, you can reposition it in a holder to recompose the shot and align the transition with horizons, buildings, or mountains.
The NiSi Nano IR Medium Graduated Neutral Density filter in size 150x170 mm is available in the following maximum effect stops:
Use this medium GND to balance exposures in scenes with a pronounced sky and mid-to-foreground elements, including buildings and mountains that protrude into the skyline. Because the filter can be moved within a holder, you can fine-tune the transition line to suit different horizon placements and compositions.

Question: What is this filter best used for?
Answer: It is designed for landscape photography where you need to darken bright skies while keeping foregrounds properly exposed. The medium transition suits scenes with buildings, mountains, or other elements that reach into the skyline.
Question: What materials and coatings does the filter have?
Answer: The filter is made from environmental optical lens glass (H-K9L), not resin. It has nano coatings on both sides that are water- and oil-repellent, plus an infrared protection coating to reduce infrared-induced color cast.
Question: Can I adjust the position of the graduated transition?
Answer: Yes. The rectangular filter is intended for use in a holder and can be repositioned to recompose the image and align the transition with different horizon lines or foreground elements.
Question: Which strength should I choose?
Answer: The filter is available in 2, 3, and 4 stop versions. Choose the stop that best matches the dynamic range you need to control between sky and foreground in your scene.
Question: Will this filter change image colors or cause vignetting?
Answer: Neutral density filters are designed not to affect image coloration, and this NiSi filter lists ultra low color cast and ultra low reflection. The product also specifies no vignetting and high definition performance for retained image quality.
