NiSi Square Nano IR GND Reverse 75x100mm – Reverse GND for sunrise and sunset control

This NiSi Square Nano IR Reverse Graduated Neutral Density (GND) filter is designed to manage the bright horizon during sunrises and sunsets. It features a reverse gradation: a darker area centered on the horizon that fades toward the top while the bottom remains clear. Photographers use this design to retain detail in the skyline without darkening the foreground.

What a reverse GND does

A reverse GND is essentially a hard-edge graduated neutral density filter where the darkest band sits at or near the horizon. As you move from that central dark band toward the top edge of the filter, the density gradually decreases. This layout was developed to better handle scenes where the strongest light is concentrated along the horizon line, such as dramatic sunrises and sunsets.

Optical construction and coatings

NiSi builds this filter from high-quality environmental optical lens glass (H-K9L), not resin. Furthermore, the filter carries nano coatings on both sides to protect image detail and provide water and oil repellency. In addition, NiSi applied an infrared protection coating to reduce the unwanted red cast that can appear when shooting with neutral density filters at small apertures. These coatings work together to keep reflections low and maintain high definition.

How it affects your image

As a neutral density filter, this GND does not affect the coloration of your image. At the same time, the infrared protection layer helps restore natural color by eliminating excess infrared light that can otherwise produce a red tint under certain shooting conditions.

Practical use and flexibility

You can reposition the filter inside a compatible holder to change the placement of the gradation relative to the scene. This lets you recompose while keeping the dark band aligned with the horizon or other bright elements. In practice, the reverse gradation protects the skyline from overexposure while leaving the foreground clear, so you retain both highlight detail and foreground exposure control.

FAQ

Question: What is a reverse GND and when should I use it?
Answer: A reverse GND is a graduated neutral density filter with the darkest area centered on the horizon that fades toward the top. Use it for sunrise and sunset scenes where the brightest light sits at the horizon, helping to retain highlight detail there while keeping the foreground clear.

Question: Will this filter change the color of my images?
Answer: Neutral density filters do not affect image coloration. Additionally, this NiSi filter includes an infrared protection coating that helps eliminate the red cast that can occur when shooting at small apertures with ND filters.

Question: What material and coatings does the filter have?
Answer: The filter is made from environmental optical lens glass (H-K9L), not resin. It features nano coatings on both sides that repel water and oil and reduce reflections, as well as an infrared protection layer.

Question: Can I adjust the gradation placement in the frame?
Answer: Yes. The filter can be repositioned within a compatible holder to align the dark band with the horizon or other bright elements, allowing you to recompose the shot for the best result.

Question: Which sizes and strengths are available for this model?
Answer: The NiSi Square Nano IR GND Reverse is available in 75 x 100 mm and in two strength options: 2 stop (0.9) and 3 stop (1.2).
