The NiSi Nano IR Soft Graduated Neutral Density filter is designed to reduce sky overexposure by producing a dark area at the top that gradually transitions to clear at the bottom. You can use this filter when the transition between bright and dark areas is not well defined, for example in mountainous terrain where light varies across the scene.
This filter targets landscape photographers who need a subtle balance between sky and foreground. It prevents highlights in the sky from blowing out while preserving detail in darker areas. Because the gradient is soft, it works well in scenes where the horizon or transition line is irregular rather than straight.
The filter is made from high quality optical glass (not resin). NiSi applies a nano coating to both sides, which helps retain fine image detail. In addition, the filter includes an infrared protection coating layer that reduces infrared light reaching the sensor. This reduces the unwanted red cast that can appear when shooting at small apertures and helps restore natural color.
You can reposition this 100x150 mm filter in a compatible holder to recompose and fine-tune the gradient relative to your scene. Repositioning in the holder lets you place the transition exactly where needed for the best result.
The Nano IR Soft Graduated ND filters in this series are available in multiple maximum-effect steps. Choose the step that matches your exposure needs:

Question: How does the soft graduated profile help with mountainous or irregular horizons?
Answer: The soft gradient creates a gradual transition from dark to clear, which suits scenes where the separation between sky and land is uneven. This helps you reduce sky overexposure without creating a hard, artificial line across the image.
Question: Will this filter change the color of my image?
Answer: Neutral density filters in this series are designed not to affect image coloration. Additionally, the infrared protection coating helps prevent infrared-induced red casts when shooting at small apertures, preserving more natural colors.
Question: Can I reposition the filter for different compositions?
Answer: Yes. The filter can be repositioned in a compatible 100x150 mm holder so you can move the transition and recompose the shot for the best balance between sky and foreground.
Question: What makes this filter different from resin filters?
Answer: This NiSi filter is made from optical glass rather than resin. The glass construction combined with nano coatings aims to retain image detail and provide durability and optical performance expected for landscape photography.
