Panasonic Lens G 42.5mm f/1.2 Leica DG Nocticron – Fast f/1.2 aperture for portraits and low-light shooting

This Micro Four Thirds single focal length lens provides 42.5mm optics, equivalent to 85mm on a 35mm camera. It pairs a very fast f/1.2 aperture with Leica NOCTICRON optics, making it suitable for portrait work and situations that benefit from shallow depth of field and soft background rendering.

F1.2 High-Speed LEICA DG NOCTICRON

The lens carries the NOCTICRON name, newly defined by Leica Camera AG for this model. It achieves a remarkably fast f/1.2 maximum aperture. The 42.5mm focal distance (middle-telephoto), equivalent to 85mm on a 35mm camera, suits portrait photography and produces a pronounced stereoscopic effect. With the large aperture you can employ soft focus for more creative images. The lens uses a 9-blade diaphragm that gives the aperture a rounded shape, creating a smooth effect in out-of-focus areas when you shoot at wider aperture settings.

High-precision, high-speed AF

Panasonic equips this lens with a newly developed stepping motor. As a result, focusing action is smooth and silent, which benefits both stills and video recording. Furthermore, autofocus performance with this lens outperforms phase-difference AF when used with a fast lens that has a small F value. When you mount the lens on LUMIX G cameras, you can take advantage of the camera’s high-precision, high-speed Contrast AF system for reliable focusing.

Aperture ring control and metal finish

The lens features an aperture ring on the barrel for direct and intuitive control over aperture settings. In addition, the exterior design—including the hood—uses metal construction. The metal finish reflects the Leica association, and the metal mount offers high reliability and durability for repeated lens changes.

Nano Surface Coating

Panasonic applies its Nano Surface technology to the lens surfaces. This extra-low refractive index coating, built with a nano-sized structure, reduces reflection across the visible light range (380nm–780nm). As a result, the lens produces clearer images with a significant reduction of ghosting and flare.

POWER O.I.S. – built-in optical stabilization

The lens integrates POWER O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer). Because a large-aperture lens naturally produces shallow depth of field, even slight camera shake can cause images to go out of focus. POWER O.I.S. compensates for both small, fast movements and larger, slower movements. Consequently, you can capture sharper images when shooting in low-light situations such as night time or indoors.

FAQ

  • Question: Is this lens suitable for portrait photography?
Answer: Yes. The 42.5mm focal length (85mm equivalent) and the fast f/1.2 aperture make it well suited for portrait work, offering strong subject separation and a rich stereoscopic effect.
  • Question: How does autofocus perform for video and stills?
Answer: The lens uses a newly developed stepping motor that delivers smooth and silent focusing, making it practical for both stills and video. When paired with LUMIX G cameras, you can also use the high-precision, high-speed Contrast AF system.
  • Question: Will stabilization help in low light?
Answer: Yes. POWER O.I.S. compensates for small, fast movements and larger, slower motion, helping you get clearer shots in low-lit situations such as indoors or at night.
  • Question: Does the lens reduce flare and ghosting?
Answer: The Panasonic Nano Surface Coating minimizes reflections across the visible spectrum (380–780nm), which reduces ghost and flare for clearer images.
  • Question: Can I control aperture directly on the lens?
Answer: Yes. The lens features an aperture ring on the barrel for direct, intuitive control of aperture settings.
  • Question: Is the lens build suitable for frequent use and lens changes?
Answer: The lens has a metal finish, metal hood, and a highly reliable metal mount designed to endure repeated lens exchanges.
