Panasonic Lumix S5M2 20-60mm kit – professional video recording and still photography in a compact full-frame camera

The LUMIX S5 II combines professional video recording and still photography in a compact full-frame DSLM body. It pairs a newly developed 24.2-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor and imaging engine with an advanced Hybrid Phase Detection AF system. As a result, the camera targets filmmakers and photographers who need dependable autofocus, strong image stabilization and high-quality video performance.

Hybrid Phase Detection autofocus

The camera uses a Phase Hybrid AF system that combines PDAF (Phase Detection AF) with Contrast Detect AF. This hybrid approach delivers fast and dependable autofocus across 779 metering areas. It detects subjects in difficult situations such as low light or backlighting, and once locked it continues tracking subjects even when multiple objects move in the frame.

Additionally, the system supports continuous AF during zooming and offers AF micro adjustment for fine-tuning focus behavior.

New 24.2MP full-frame sensor and imaging engine

Panasonic developed a new 24.2-megapixel 35mm full-frame CMOS sensor that complies with PDAF. The imaging engine has been newly developed to provide high resolution and natural rendering. It also achieves approximately 2× higher-speed signal processing to support high bit-rate video recording.

Advanced image stabilization for stills and video

The S5 II features a powerful image stabilization system designed for a wide range of shooting conditions. By combining the camera’s Body I.S. with O.I.S. in LUMIX S Series lenses, the 5-axis Dual I.S. maximizes correction power and enables up to a 6.5-stop slower shutter speed.

For video, Active I.S. further improves stability. It detects the status of camera shake and optimizes horizontal, vertical and rotational correction ratios. In practice, Active I.S. increases compensation to about 200% more camera shake correction compared with conventional image stabilization.

Professional video capabilities

The LUMIX S5 II offers video performance suitable for serious videographers. It records 6K 10-bit (4:2:0) in 17:9 or 3:2, and 5.9K 10-bit in 16:9. The camera also supports unlimited 4:2:2 10-bit C4K/4K recording. A new heat-dispersion mechanism removes recording-time limits due to overheating.

The camera captures a wide dynamic range with 14+ stop V-Log/V-Gamut. In addition, a REAL-TIME LUT function allows on-camera color grading by applying LUT files (.VLT/.cube) saved on an SD memory card. This function works for compatible video and photo files and can be used for live streaming, enabling immediate color grading on the spot.

Practical tools and assist functions

  • Video assist tools include Waveform Monitor, Vector Scope and Zebra Pattern for precise exposure and color control.
  • Workflow and monitoring features include System Frequency (24.00Hz), Synchro Scan and a Fan mode.
  • The camera includes a redesigned control panel that enables quick menu selection for faster operation in the field.

Connectivity, power and robust construction

The S5 II provides dual UHS-II card slots that support Relay Recording, Backup Recording and Allocation Recording for flexible media handling. The high-capacity 2200mAh battery can be recharged via AC or USB for convenient power management on location.

For connectivity, the camera includes a full-size HDMI Type A terminal, high-speed USB 3.2 Gen 2 and a cable lock holder to prevent unwanted unplugging. It also offers wireless communication via Wi‑Fi on both 5GHz and 2.4GHz bands for fast and stable connections with smartphones and tablets.

Build-wise, the camera is constructed with magnesium alloy die-cast front and rear frames and features splash- and dust-resistant sealing for reliable in-field use.

FAQ

Question: Will the camera overheat during long video takes?

Answer: No. The LUMIX S5 II uses a new heat-dispersion mechanism so there is no recording-time limit caused by overheating.

Question: How reliable is autofocus in difficult lighting or with moving subjects?

Answer: The Phase Hybrid AF system combines PDAF and Contrast Detect AF and uses 779 metering areas. It detects targets in low light and backlighting, and it continues tracking once locked, even when multiple objects move in the frame.

Question: Can I use the camera handheld for stable video?

Answer: Yes. The camera’s 5-axis Dual I.S. combines Body I.S. and lens O.I.S. and with Active I.S. it optimizes correction ratios to achieve up to 6.5-stop slower shutter speed and roughly 200% greater shake compensation compared with conventional stabilization.

Question: What recording and color-grading options are available for filmmakers?

Answer: The S5 II records high-quality footage including 6K 10-bit and unlimited 4:2:2 10-bit C4K/4K. It also captures 14+ stop V-Log/V-Gamut and provides a REAL-TIME LUT function to apply .VLT/.cube files from an SD card for on-camera color grading, which can also be used during live streaming.

Question: What should I use for media and power on location?

Answer: Use UHS-II cards to take advantage of the dual card slots that support Relay, Backup and Allocation recording. The camera runs on a 2200mAh battery that you can recharge via AC or USB for flexible field workflows.
