The Panasonic LUMIX S5M2X body packs professional video recording features into a compact full-frame mirrorless camera body. It supports All-Intra, recording ProRes to an SSD via USB, Apple ProRes RAW output over HDMI, and wired or wireless IP streaming. You get advanced autofocus, enhanced image stabilization, and a newly developed 24-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor designed for high-resolution stills and high bit-rate video.
The camera uses a Phase Hybrid AF system that combines Phase Detection AF (PDAF) with Contrast Detect AF. This new system delivers fast and dependable subject acquisition and provides 779-area metering.
It works well in challenging situations such as low light and backlighting. Once the camera locks on a subject, it continues tracking even when other objects move in the frame. The system also supports Continuous AF during zooming and AF micro adjustment for fine-tuning focus performance.
Panasonic developed a new 24.2-megapixel 35mm full-frame CMOS sensor that supports PDAF. The accompanying imaging engine is newly developed to achieve high resolution and natural rendering.
In addition, the new engine doubles signal processing speed approximately, enabling high bit-rate video recording and improved overall performance for demanding video tasks.
The S5M2X includes a powerful image stabilization system suitable for a wide range of shooting scenarios. It combines Body I.S. in the camera with O.I.S. in compatible LUMIX S Series lenses to form 5-axis Dual I.S.
Dual I.S. maximizes correction power and allows up to 6.5-stop slower shutter speeds. The camera also adds Active I.S. for more stable video recording. Active I.S. determines the type of camera shake and optimizes horizontal, vertical, and rotational correction ratios. As a result, it achieves approximately 200% greater compensation of camera shake compared with conventional stabilization.
The LUMIX S5M2X targets serious videographers with a video feature set comparable to higher-tier cinema models. It supports multiple high-resolution recording formats and flexible workflows:
The camera also benefits from a new heat-dispersion mechanism, which prevents recording limits due to overheating.
The camera captures 14+ stops in V-Log/V-Gamut to deliver a high dynamic range and broad color reproduction. You can apply a REAL-TIME LUT (.VLT/.cube) saved on an SD memory card to enable color grading directly in-camera for compatible video and photo files.
This real-time LUT function lets you preview intended color grading on the spot and stream with that look applied, which can simplify live streaming and on-location workflows.
The S5M2X includes practical connections and media options to support professional workflows:
The camera is built for in-field use. It features magnesium alloy die-cast front and rear frames and a splash- and dust-resistant construction. Panasonic also redesigned the control panel for quicker menu selection and added a Fan mode for thermal management.
Video assist functions include a Waveform Monitor, Vector Scope and Zebra Pattern. Additional control options include System Frequency (24.00Hz) and Synchro Scan for flexible video capture settings.
The LUMIX S5M2X uses Dual Native ISO sensitivity to minimize noise by selecting an optimal circuit path according to the sensitivity setting before gain processing. This approach allows cleaner high-sensitivity recording and supports a maximum ISO 51200 with an extended range up to ISO 204800.

Question: Can the camera record ProRes files internally?
Answer: Yes. The camera supports ProRes recording to an SSD via USB, enabling high-quality ProRes workflows directly to external storage.
Question: Is Apple ProRes RAW supported and how is it recorded?
Answer: Apple ProRes RAW is available via HDMI RAW output. You can record Apple ProRes RAW by connecting the camera to a compatible external recorder over HDMI (for example, Atomos recorders).
Question: How does the autofocus perform in low light or with backlit subjects?
Answer: The Phase Hybrid AF system combines PDAF and Contrast Detect AF and uses 779-area metering. It is designed to detect subjects in low light and backlighting, lock on, and continue tracking even when other objects move in the frame.
Question: What stabilization benefits does the camera offer for handheld video?
Answer: The S5M2X uses 5-axis Dual I.S. and Active I.S. to maximize correction. Dual I.S. allows up to 6.5-stop slower shutter speeds, and Active I.S. optimizes correction ratios to achieve around 200% greater shake compensation compared with conventional stabilization, which improves handheld video stability.
