Samyang MF 14mm f/2.8 Nikon Z – 14mm ultra wide manual-focus lens for landscape, astro and travel

The Samyang MF 14 mm f/2.8 Z is an ultra wide-angle lens made for Nikon Z mount mirrorless cameras. It supports full-frame sensors and gives a very wide field of view suited for landscape, astro and travel photography. The lens uses manual focus only and features a mechanical aperture ring.

Key advantages and intended uses

This lens works well when you need an expansive perspective for landscapes, night sky work and wide travel scenes. Its ultra wide angle and f/2.8 maximum aperture allow you to compose dramatic wide shots and work in lower light. Because the lens is full-frame compatible, it suits both full-frame and compatible smaller-format Nikon Z cameras.

Optical design

The lens uses an advanced optical formula with 14 elements arranged in 10 groups. The design specifically includes:

  • 3 High Refractive (HR) glass elements
  • 2 aspheric elements
  • 2 Extra Low Dispersion (ED) glass elements

These elements combine to maintain sharpness and image resolution across the frame and to reduce chromatic aberration. Samyang’s UMC multi-layer coating helps counter reflections and stray light to preserve image contrast.

Build quality and handling

The lens has a metal barrel construction that provides a solid, durable feel. It is weather sealed to help prevent dust and moisture from reaching the internal optical groups. You operate focus manually via a wide and smooth focus ring designed for precise control. The aperture is set with a traditional mechanical ring that uses full-stop markings; the lens does not include electrical contacts or a CPU, so aperture and focus information are not communicated electronically to the camera.

A fixed lens hood is built into the design, and the rear of the lens includes a holder for thin gelatin filters, allowing you to add simple filter effects despite the ultra wide front element.

FAQ

Question: Is this lens compatible with full-frame Nikon Z cameras?
Answer: Yes. The Samyang MF 14 mm f/2.8 Z is full-frame compatible and can be used on Nikon Z full-frame bodies as well as compatible smaller-format Z cameras.

Question: Does this lens offer autofocus?
Answer: No. This lens is manual focus only. It features a wide, smooth focus ring for precise manual focusing.

Question: Can I control aperture from the camera body?
Answer: No. The lens lacks electrical contacts and a CPU. Aperture is controlled by the mechanical ring on the lens with full-stop markings.

Question: Can I use filters on this ultra wide lens?
Answer: You can use thin gelatin filters via the rear filter holder. A fixed front hood and the ultra wide front element limit use of standard front screw-in filters.
