The Blackmagic Design UltraStudio Express Recorder 3G is a compact video recording device for professional capture, live streaming, and archiving via USB4 or Thunderbolt 4. It features both 3G-SDI and HDMI 2.0 inputs and can record broadcast-quality video in SD, HD, and 2K up to 1080p60 and DCI 2K 60p. With support for 10-bit video, embedded multichannel audio, and popular software such as OBS, Wirecast, vMix, and DaVinci Resolve, it’s a flexible solution for cameras, production switchers, video recorders, and other professional video sources.
The UltraStudio Express Recorder 3G is small enough to carry along with a laptop, yet offers the connectivity and image quality required for professional productions. It’s ideal for live streaming, video conferencing, recording from switchers, and archiving footage from legacy broadcast equipment.
The device features a multi-rate 3G-SDI input and a full-size HDMI 2.0 input. This allows you to connect professional cameras, studio cameras, video mixers, game consoles, and other HDMI or SDI sources without external converters.
The UltraStudio Express Recorder 3G supports standard PAL and NTSC formats as well as 720p, 1080i, 1080p, and DCI 2K. Frame rates of up to 60 frames per second provide support for both traditional TV formats and modern progressive-scan productions.
Support for uncompressed 10-bit YUV and RGB provides high color precision during recording. The footage retains more color nuances and is therefore better suited for color correction, chroma key, and professional post-production than standard 8-bit capture.
The device works with popular streaming and recording software such as OBS Studio, Wirecast, vMix, and Zoom. It can be used to turn a professional SDI or HDMI camera into a high-quality video source for live broadcasts and digital meetings.
Via SDI, up to 16 audio channels can be captured along with the video, while HDMI supports up to 8 embedded audio channels. Audio is sampled at 48 kHz and 24 bits in accordance with professional TV standards.
The UltraStudio Express Recorder 3G is compatible with a wide range of codecs, including Apple ProRes, DNxHD, DNxHR, HEVC, DVCPRO HD, XDCAM, DPX, and uncompressed video.
The computer connection uses USB-C with a 40 Gb/s data rate. It works with compatible USB4 and Thunderbolt 4 computers and is powered via the same cable.
Blackmagic Media Express can be used for easy recording and management of video files. Desktop Video Utility is used for settings, drivers, and firmware updates.
